In 2004, I developed the corporate design and sales promotion materials—including brochures and printed stationery (business cards, letterheads, etc.)—for the MainÄppelhaus Lohrberg e.V., an association dedicated to traditional meadow orchards on Frankfurt’s local landmark, the Lohrberg. As the active leaseholder of a meadow orchard plot myself, I have now designed a second, portrait-oriented version of the logo to make it more versatile for use on social media etc.

Ich bin als einer der Pioniere trotzdem sehr dankbar für meinen selbstgewählten Weg und darf trotz der Fülle an vermeintlicher Konkurrenz ein etabliertes Dasein führen. Auch ohne social-media Selbstmarketing darf ich für und mit meinem Umfeld spannende Jobs erfüllen.

Das Werkzeug Farbsprühdose ist unschuldig und kann für wirklich alles herhalten, wenn man weiß was man da tut. 

So habe ich hier zwei nette Referenzen aus dem Außen- und innenwerblichen, sowie innenarchitektonischen Umfeld herausgesucht:

Für den Bäcker Lutz aus der schönen Vulkaneifel habe ich schon sehr viele Niederlassungen mit spontanen Farbsprühdosenartwork und Sprühdosenkunst erstellt. Wie immer, freihand, außer den Logos, die ich teilweise schablonieren/stenciln ließ. Hier das Beispiel aus Faid von 2025.

Für Göthling & Kaufmann in Eschborn sprühte ich nachdem ich für die Einführung diverser Fahrzeuge Graffiti Workshops als Event vollzog, einen zweiseitigen Pylonen für die Audi Niederlassung und eine Metallplatte für den Eingangsbereich der VW-Nutzfahrzeugniederlassung 2019.

It’s not the tool’s fault …

At present, there is an incredible number of street artists, painters of „preventive kitsch,“ urban art agencies, graffiti artists, street art booking companies, and providers of commissioned graffiti—not just globally, but now regionally as well. What I—along with many others—foresaw back in the early 90s has now become a genuine market where it is not just the spray paint manufacturers who are making a fortune.

As one of the pioneers, I remain deeply grateful for the path I chose for myself; despite the abundance of perceived competition, I enjoy an established career. Even without relying on social media self-promotion, I am able to take on exciting projects for and with my local community.

The spray can itself is neutral; it can be used for absolutely anything, provided you know what you are doing.

Here are two great examples of my work, covering the fields of outdoor and indoor advertising as well as interior design:

For the Lutz bakery in the beautiful Volcanic Eifel region, I have created spontaneous spray-paint artwork and murals for numerous branches. As always, the work is done freehand—with the exception of the logos, some of which were created using stencils. Shown here is an example from the Faid branch, created in 2025.

For Göthling & Kaufmann in Eschborn, I conducted graffiti workshops as events to mark the launch of various vehicle models; subsequently, in 2019, I spray-painted a double-sided pylon sign for the Audi dealership and a metal panel for the entrance area of ​​the VW Commercial Vehicles dealership.

Wie sich herausstellte, zeigt die Deutsche Börse im Rahmen ihrer Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation gGmbH Fotos des Hip Hop Dokumentarfotographen Jamel Shabazz, dessen Buch ich natürlich auch schon lange kenne. 

Er selbst war auch zur Eröffnung vor Ort und ich vermute, daß nicht viele Hip Hop Kulturliebhaber davon wussten. 

Viele Fotos zeigen Kids, Jugendliche der 80er mit Cazal-Brillen. Auf einem Foto sieht man Indoor Tags aus einer New Yorker U-Bahn von JOEY TPA, den ich Mitte der 2000er in Mainz kennenlernte und mit dem ich auf Tagtour war.

Cari Zalloni, der Gründer von Cazal war 2004 in Offenbach und ich hatte die große Ehre mit ihm und meiner damaligen Freundin Susi Reichert über Günter Yogi Lauke mit DJ Back Q / Thierry Roche im italienischen Ristorante Die Zwei zu essen.

Viele Hip Hop Posen, die wir in den 80ern und 90ern nachahmten sind auf dieser Ausstellung zu sehen. Erinnerungen kommen wach, warum Katmando, Sessi, Endtwo und ich 1990 von Paris nach London übersetzten um dort noch die wenigen Möglichkeiten zu haben, alte Schuhe/Sneakers zu ergattern. Ich zahlte für ein Paar Puma States/Baskets  satte 30 britische Pfund (damals 90,- DM-, für mich gefühlte 250,- Euro) unter dem Ladentisch. Ebenfalls erstanden wir Adidas Superstars. Es dauerte noch locker knappe 3 Jahre bis die Industrie entdeckte, daß es schon sehr viel länger einen Run bzw. Hype der Jugendlichen um alte Turnschuhe, sprich Sneakers gab. Heutzutage kaum noch vorstellbar. Später wurde dieser Hype dann von der Techno-Bewegung übernommen und das Erkennungszeichen für Hip Hoper, eben auch z.B. die Sneaker mit Fatlaces wurde verwässert. In Pre-Internet-Zeiten konnte man in eine fremde Stadt kommen und klar an der Kleidungsoptik erkennen, wer etwas mit Hip Hop zu tun hatte. Um ca. 1996 war das hinfällig, da die Ästhetik Mainstream wurde.

Hip-Hop History @ Deutsche Börse

When I visited my friend and fellow student, Bernd Heymann, at Deutsche Börse yesterday—he works there as a Corporate Identity/Design Manager in the Brand, Media & Analytics Group Communication & Marketing division—I was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar portrait of DJ Grandmixer DST from Brooklyn beaming back at me.

As it turned out, Deutsche Börse—through its Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation—was exhibiting photos by hip-hop documentary photographer Jamel Shabazz, whose book I have long been familiar with.

He was actually present at the opening, though I suspect not many hip-hop culture enthusiasts knew about it.

Many of the photos feature kids and teenagers from the 80s wearing Cazal glasses. One photo shows indoor tags from a New York subway car by JOEY TPA—someone I met in Mainz in the mid-2000s and with whom I used to go out tagging.

Cari Zalloni, the founder of Cazal, was in Offenbach in 2004, and I had the great honor of dining with him, my then-girlfriend Susi Reichert, Günter „Yogi“ Lauke, and DJ Back Q (Thierry Roche) at the Italian restaurant *Die Zwei*.

The exhibition features many of the hip-hop poses we used to imitate in the 80s and 90s. It brings back memories of why Katmando, Sessi, Endtwo, and I traveled from Paris to London in 1990—to take advantage of the few remaining opportunities to snag old-school shoes or sneakers. I paid a hefty 30 British pounds (90 DM back then—which felt like 250 euros to me) under the counter for a pair of Puma States/Baskets. We also bought Adidas Superstars. It took the industry a good three years to realize that young people had already been caught up in a craze—or hype—for old-school trainers (sneakers) for quite some time. It’s hard to imagine nowadays. Later, the techno movement adopted this hype, and the signature look of the hip-hop scene—such as sneakers with „fat laces“—became diluted. In the pre-internet era, you could visit an unfamiliar city and instantly tell from someone’s style whether they were part of the hip-hop scene. By around 1996, that was no longer the case, as the aesthetic had gone mainstream.

Ich wundere mich immer wieder, wie wenig Verwaltungen und Institutionen ihr näheres Umfeld abscannen wenn Aufgaben vorliegen, die es zu bewältigen gilt. Oder liegt es doch am Klüngel (netterweise kann man auch sagen: Beziehungsgeflecht), daß es in letzter Zeit immer mehr vermehrt dazu kommt, daß Buchungen teilweise irrwitzige Wege nehmen?

Da werden Artists aus den letzten Ecken der Erde beauftragt, teils mit fragwürdigen Ergebnissen und Honoraren, siehe Konstablerwache-Artwork in Frankfurt, bei dem der Aufschrei der Bürgerschaft vermutlich zu Recht fragte, warum es da keine Ausschreibung gab und die Miete für das Artwork unbedingt zwei Millionen Euro betragen muss, und das nicht mal exklusiv. Hätte da man keine lokalen Artists nehmen können, auch wenn das Geld noch aus dem Stadtmarketing noch übrig war und es unbedingt ausgegeben werden musste?

Gestern bekam ich die Info, daß das Struwwelpetermuseum in Frankfurt Künstler für eine Interpretation des Kinderbuchs anfragten bzw. sammelten. Ich habe die Ausstellung jetzt nicht gesehen, hatte mich aber gefragt, warum z.B. meine Neuinterpretation des Struwwelpeters von 2012 auf der Fassade Ringelstraße/Ecke Eberhardtstraße in Bornheim vermutlich keinerlei Erwähnung findet:

Why look further afield when the best options are right on your doorstep?

It constantly amazes me how little administrative bodies and institutions scan their immediate surroundings when faced with tasks that need handling. Or is it down to cronyism—or, to put it more politely, „networks of connections“—that we are increasingly seeing bookings take such bizarre routes?

Artists are commissioned from the far corners of the globe—often with questionable results and fees. Take, for instance, the *Konstablerwache* artwork in Frankfurt: the public outcry rightly questioned why there was no open tender and why the rental cost for the piece had to be a staggering two million euros—without even securing exclusive rights. Couldn’t they have hired local artists instead—even if there was leftover city marketing budget that simply had to be spent?

Yesterday, I learned that Frankfurt’s Struwwelpeter Museum had been reaching out to artists—or gathering ideas—for a new interpretation of the children’s book. I haven’t seen the exhibition myself, but I did wonder why my own reinterpretation of *Struwwelpeter*—created back in 2012 on the building facade at the corner of Ringelstraße and Eberhardtstraße in Bornheim—apparently gets no mention at all:

Von meinen zusätzlichen Rollen als Designer und Illustrator ganz zu schweigen die in Publikationen zum Tragen kommen. Da gäbe es dann noch das leider eingestellte Form Magazin, Page und viele andere fachspezifische Magazine, wie z.B. Novum.

Hin zum vermeintlich geläuterten »Sprayer«, der heute brav Ästhetik nach Wunsch oder frei im öffentlichen und privaten Raum für fast alle großen Unternehmen, Institutionen und Privatpersonen auch international gestaltet, ergibt sich mir ein Bild des in der Öffentlichkeit, im Licht stehenden Clowns, der auf Knopfdruck dienstleistet. 

Dabei ist in Deutschland alles auf eine kleine Schicht ausgerichtet, die schaltet und waltet. Nicht anders zu erklären ist es da die seit über 35 Jahren anhaltende Politik keine wichtigen Änderungen im Sinne des so genannten kleinen Mannes zulässt. 

Das perfide Zusammenspiel einiger Akteure scheint wirkliche Reformen zu verhindern und das Hinhalten bzw. die heisse Luft, die einem da entgegenbläst ist fast schon so heiß wie der Sommer 2026. Steuerreform-wo? Gesundheitswesen – wo hat sich da was verbessert? Verkehrswesen-bitte ein anderes Thema. Kapital ist unfassbar vorhanden, nur unglaublich dreist und unverschämt aufgeteilt. Man hat den Eindruck, es darf hier nicht gut werden und Menschen werden mit Absicht in Abhängigkeit und Dienst gehalten.

Warum schreibe ich das alles? Als Mensch, der wach und mit moralisch-ethischen Gedankengut erwuchs, führte mich mein Weg von dieser Ohnmacht über das oben beschriebene hin zum Protest und zum Stylewriting/Graffiti Art, faktisch zur Street Art und letztendlich auch direkt in die Verwertung. Alles wird im Kapitalismus zum Produkt. 

»Wenn harte Arbeit zum Erfolg führen würde, wäre der Esel der Besitzer des Hofes … « schöner Satz, der genau das beschreibt was systemrelevant erscheint: Es braucht Menschen, die dienen um diese Systemik am Laufen zu halten. Beispiel ist die Besteuerung von extrem hohen Einkommen und den Gewinnen aus Kapitalanlagen, die so genannte Kapitalertragssteuer, die erst seit 2009 existiert. Während Gewinne aus vermeintlich echter Arbeit mit bis zu 45 % Steuern (!!!) belegt werden, agiert diese nur mit 25 %. Wie kann das sein?

Die normative Kraft des Faktischen – wir gewöhnen uns an vieles. Was gesellschaftlich etabliert ist, wird Normalität. Nur eines darf nicht sein: Die persönliche Mit-Gestaltung des öffentlichen Raums wird nach wie vor argwöhnisch von Behörden und Institutionen beobachtet und verfolgt, obwohl es schon weltweit seit über 50 Jahren Teil des weltweiten Alltags darstellt, ja am Ende sogar noch die eigenen persönlichen Ausdruck der Kultur an sich stellt. Dass das Ganze auch noch die größte weltumspannende Kunstform darstellt darf da ruhig ebenfalls erwähnt werden.

Beuys‘ Aussage der sozialen Plastik ist damit voll zum Tragen gekommen: »Die einzig revolutionäre Kraft ist die Kraft der menschlichen Kreativität – die einzige revolutionäre Kraft ist die Kunst.«

Dahingehend hatte mich seine Aussage zu Beginn meiner künstlerischen und gestalterischen Tätigkeit »Weder durch legales noch durch illegales Hervorbringen von Kunstwerken entsteht der Gesellschaft oder dem Einzelnen Schädigung. Hingegen bedeutet deren willentliche Vernichtung Unterdrückung von Möglichkeiten zur Bewusstseinsbildung.« überzeugt.

Und nichts gegen Grau, aber wir haben ne Menge davon. Auch in den Herzen und Köpfen der Bürger. Sehr seriös. Heute erscheint dazu in der Serie »Frankfurt – Stadt der Kontraste« in der Frankfurter Neuen Presse FNP ein Artikel über Graffiti/Street Art/Stylewriting bei dem ich auch eine nicht unwesentliche Rolle spiele.

»Die Kreativität des Menschen ist das wahre Kapital … « Joseph Beuys

Familiar gray

Over nearly 40 years of working—both as a fine artist and in applied arts—with spray cans and other tools, a vast number of media reports have been produced about me and the subject of graffiti. Coverage has ranged from print media—such as magazines like *Stern*, *Der Spiegel*, and city guides like *Prinz* and *Fritz* (now *Frizz*); major institutions like the *Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung* and *Frankfurter Rundschau*; regional papers like the *FNP* (*Frankfurter Neue Presse*) and *Höchster Kreisblatt*; and nationwide DPA wire reports (e.g., on the Apple Macintosh Mac Expo)—to online outlets and blogs (such as *Brudi Podcast*, *Walls Don’t Lie*, etc.). Yet, for all this writing, little actually changes.

That is not to mention my additional roles as a designer and illustrator, which also feature in various publications—including the sadly discontinued *Form* magazine, *Page*, and many other trade journals like *Novum*.

When I look at my own trajectory—evolving into a supposedly reformed »sprayer« who now dutifully creates aesthetics (either to client specifications or through free expression) in public and private spaces for major international corporations, institutions and private individuals—I see an image of a clown standing in the public spotlight, performing services on command.

Ultimately, the entire system in Germany is geared toward a small elite who call the shots. There is no other way to explain why, for over 35 years, political policies have prevented any significant changes that might benefit the so-called »little guy.«

The insidious interplay between certain players seems to block genuine reform; the stalling tactics and the »hot air« one encounters are almost as scorching as the summer of 2026. Tax reform—where is it? Healthcare—where have things actually improved? Transport—let’s not even go there. There is an unfathomable amount of capital available, yet it is distributed with incredible audacity and shamelessness. One gets the impression that things aren’t *allowed* to get better here, and that people are deliberately kept in a state of dependency and servitude.
Why am I writing all this? As someone who grew up with an alert mind and a foundation of moral and ethical values, my path led me from that sense of powerlessness—and the experiences described above—to protest and style writing/graffiti art, effectively to street art, and ultimately straight into commodification. Under capitalism, everything becomes a product.

»If hard work led to success, the donkey would own the farm …« — a fine phrase that captures exactly what appears to be »systemically important«: the need for people who serve to keep this system running. A case in point is the taxation of extremely high incomes versus profits from capital investments—specifically the capital gains tax, which has only existed since 2009. While earnings from supposedly „real“ work are taxed at rates of up to 45% (!!!), capital gains are taxed at just 25%. How can that be?

The normative power of the factual—we get used to a lot of things. What is socially established becomes the norm. Yet there is one thing that is not tolerated: the personal shaping of public space by individuals continues to be viewed with suspicion and prosecuted by authorities and institutions—even though this practice has been part of everyday life around the globe for over fifty years and, ultimately, represents a form of personal cultural expression. It is also worth mentioning that this phenomenon constitutes the world’s largest global art form.

In this context, Beuys’ concept of „social sculpture“ has fully come to fruition: »The only revolutionary force is the power of human creativity—the only revolutionary force is art.«

I was completely convinced by his statement—made early in my career as an artist and designer—that »neither the legal nor the illegal creation of artworks causes harm to society or the individual; conversely, their willful destruction suppresses opportunities for the development of consciousness.«

And while there is nothing wrong with the color gray, we certainly have a lot of it—including in the hearts and minds of citizens. Very »respectable.« Today, the *Frankfurter Neue Presse* (FNP) is publishing an article on graffiti, street art, and style writing as part of its »Frankfurt – City of Contrasts« series—a piece in which I play a significant role.

Wir haben Anfang/Mitter der 90er unfassbar viel zusammen erlebt. 1990 eine gemeinsame Ausstellung in der Galerie des Vonderaumuseums in Fulda, eine große Graffiti Street Art-Mural 1994 in Klein-Welzheim bei Seligenstadt, zusammen mit Darco (Paris), Daim, Katmando, Can2, Specter (Paris), Skena, Blok & Shok, die nach wie vor existiert und eine Reise nach Österreich zu Creative 5 nach Wolfurt bei der ich live auf einem Firmenevent eine Leinwand sprühte und wir bei der sehr musikalischen Inhaberfamilie wohnten. Dabei lernte ich meine Liebe zum Schlagzeugspielen kennen. Die Skizzen in meinem Blackbook aus dem Zug in dem wir uns gegenseitig portraitierten sind mir eine liebevolle Erinnerung.

Die Fahrt zur Ausstellung nach Fulda 1990 in meinem Käfer wird mir immer in Erinnerung bleiben, da wir die übergroßen teils besprühten Keilrahmen-Leinwände (120 x 160 cm u.ä. Größen) mit Panzerband auf dem Dach meines VW-Käfers festklebten und damit auf die Autobahn fuhren, jeder mit seinem Arm die Leinwände festhaltend, da die durch die Geschwindigkeit diese natürlich sich aufblähten und wegfliegen zu drohten.

1999 stellten wir gemeinsam im Marburger KFZ zusammen mit meinem GBF Crewmember Seak aus.
Diese Werke wurden ihm dann durch Mietschulden weggepfändet, die teilweise immer noch dort bei einer Firma Bossmann einlagern. Ich selbst konnte nur meine eigenen Werke aus dieser Pfändung zurückholen.

Ebenfalls 2007 war er dabei als ich Fotografenlegende Martha Cooper aus NYC am Hbf Frankfurt für die Hip Hop Expo dort abholte und wir uns auf dem White Gallery Event der Telekom in Köln wiedertrafen.

Zuletzt lebte und agierte Alesh in Hamburg. Siehe auch https://www.aleshone.com.

R.I.P. Alesh One

I have just learned that my loyal companion and friend Alesh Pliml—also known as Alesh One or Merlin—passed away peacefully at home this past Saturday. Originally from Prague, his journey took him through Seligenstadt, Marburg, and Siegen before he finally settled in Hamburg. After battling severe laryngeal cancer, he had visited me and my studio with his brother as recently as October 2025.

We experienced an incredible amount together during the early to mid-90s. There was a joint exhibition in 1990 at the Vonderau Museum gallery in Fulda; a large graffiti/street art mural created in 1994 in Klein-Welzheim (near Seligenstadt) alongside Darco (Paris), Daim, Katmando, Can2, Specter (Paris), Skena, Blok, and Shok—a piece that still exists today; and a trip to Wolfurt, Austria, for „Creative 5,“ where I spray-painted a canvas live at a corporate event while we stayed with the owners—a very musical family. It was during that trip that I discovered my love for playing the drums. The sketches in my blackbook—drawn on the train as we sketched portraits of each other—remain a cherished memory.

The drive to the Fulda exhibition in 1990 in my VW Beetle is something I will never forget: we used duct tape to secure oversized, partially spray-painted canvases (120 x 160 cm and similar sizes) to the roof of the car and hit the highway. We each had to hold onto the canvases with one arm because the speed caused them to billow out, threatening to fly off.

In 1999, we held a joint exhibition at the KFZ in Marburg together with Seak, a fellow member of my GBF crew.
Those works were later seized due to unpaid rent; some of them are reportedly still in storage at a company called Bossmann. I was only able to retrieve my own works from that seizure. It was also in 2007 that he was with me when I picked up the legendary NYC photographer Martha Cooper at Frankfurt Central Station for the Hip Hop Expo, and we met up again at Telekom’s White Gallery event in Cologne.

New Location – New Studio

After 1.5 years, my studio space in Hofheim was—kindly—given notice of termination effective July 1, 2026; consequently, my studio, BOMBER, is now located at Taunusstraße 8 (rear building) in 65795 Hattersheim-Okriftel, Germany.

Mein Thema der Realisierung/Wahrnehmung und Mitgestaltung des öffentlichen und privaten Raums via Farbe, Material und Ästhetik, gemeinhin auch als Graffiti Art, Street Art, Stylewriting oder Urbane Kunst bezeichnet eröffnete mir 2012 an der Brüder-Grimm Schule in Frankfurt und 2013/2014 an der Carl-von-Weinberg Schule in Frankfurt-Niederrad die Möglichkeit gemeinsam mit Schulkids Flächen in und an den Schulen mit Acryllack-Farbsprühdosen und Fassadenfarbe zu gestalten.

Dass es hierbei um mehr als nur »Kunst« geht, erscheint für viele Lehrkräfte und Pädagogen klar, da das Thema Graffiti, respektive Street Art viele Bereiche berührt, institutionalisiert oft eher belächelt wird und soziologisch eher dann der Prävention dient als dem gestalterischen Empfinden. Dabei sollen die Schüler danach Verantwortung für ihren Raum und Ihr Artwork übernehmen.

Tatsächlich, und das ist leider auch sehr oft der Fall, geht es gar nicht um die Gestaltungswucht und den Ausdruck der Artworks, sondern um deren Wirkung auf die zu Beschulenden (herrliches Wort) und deren Nachfolger. 

Das Ganze ist also auch hier wieder mehr als nur Technik, Wissen und Transfer dieser Informationen, sondern spielt in viele Bereiche.

Die Gestaltung bzw. die Ästhetik z.B. von Stylewriting-Graffiti Art ist für viele nur Klischee und spielt keine Rolle. Zu austauschbar und kunsthistorisch zu wenig nachvollziehbar ist die Fülle der Graffiti-Street Artists und deren Stilistik. Daher wird pädogisch oft viel auf gemeingültige und leicht verständliche sozialkompatible Aussagen in Bildwelten wie Illustrationen und werbische Ästhetiken gesetzt. 

Nun bin ich zum dritten Mal Schulkünstler, dieses Mal an der Goetheschule in Neu-Isenburg für das kommende Schuljahr 2027 und das obengenannte wird bei mir nicht passieren.

Der mediale Feixtanz Menschen in Sicherheit zu wiegen und einzulullen wird bei mir hinterfragt. 

Von allem zuviel und trotzdem Wachstum … eine ziemlich klare Analyse unseres medial transportierten Wirtschaftsdogmas, die Kabarettist Volker Piespers schon vor über 15 Jahren entlarvte. Dieser Satz beschreibt meiner Meinung nach ganz gut, warum wir so eine hysterisch reagieren: Wir lesen Krise und meinen Überstättigung. Wir jammern, ob der Entsozialisierung der Gesellschaft, obwohl fast alle in sozialen Netzwerken aktiv sind.

Echtes Stylewriting/Graffiti Art ist eines der wenigen wirklich kritischen und weltverändernden Künste und Kreativität bedeutet auch immer Protest über herrschende Zustände der einen umgebenden Welt. Es bedeutet individuell nicht nur künstlerisch/gestalterisch seine Stilistik zu entdecken, zu fördern, Selbstständigkeit und Innovation zu lernen, sondern überhaupt, der berühmte Tellerrand … darüber hinauszudenken.

Wir dürfen also gespannt sein, wie reflektiv Kids auf die digitale Übermacht mit analogen Gerätschaften agieren.

There is little resistance or alternative to the dominance of so-called STEM subjects in the secondary education systems of Germany. One nice idea for transforming the image of art—giving it more merit (while remaining inherently subversive)—is the »School Artist«-project run by the Frankfurt Sparkasse Foundation.

My work focuses on the realization, perception, and co-creation of public and private spaces through color, material, and aesthetics—commonly known as graffiti art, street art, style writing, or urban art. In 2012 (at the Brüder-Grimm School in Frankfurt) and 2013/2014 (at the Carl-von-Weinberg School in Frankfurt-Niederrad), this gave me the opportunity to collaborate with students on designing surfaces inside and outside the schools using acrylic spray paints and facade paint.

Many teachers and educators clearly recognize that this involves more than just »art«, as the subject of graffiti—or street art—touches on many areas; within institutions, it is often met with a dismissive smile and viewed sociologically primarily as a tool for prevention. The goal is for students to subsequently take ownership of their space and their artwork.

In reality—and this is unfortunately all too often the case—the focus is not on the creative impact or expression of the artworks themselves, but rather on their effect on the »school-attendees« (a delightful term) and their successors.

Thus, the entire endeavor transcends mere technique, knowledge, and the transfer of information, extending instead into a wide range of other areas.

For many, the design—or aesthetics—of style-writing graffiti art is nothing more than a cliché and holds no significance. The sheer number of graffiti and street artists, along with their stylistic variations, makes the field seem too interchangeable and difficult to grasp from an art-historical perspective. Consequently, educational approaches often prioritize universally valid, easily understood, and socially acceptable imagery, such as illustrations and advertising-style aesthetics. I am now serving as a school artist for the third time—this time at the Goetheschule in Neu-Isenburg for the upcoming 2027 school year—and the scenario mentioned above will not happen in my case.

I question the media’s gloating dance designed to lull people into a false sense of security.

»Too much of everything, yet growth continues…«—a rather clear analysis of the economic dogma propagated by the media, one that cabaret artist Volker Piespers exposed over 15 years ago. In my view, this phrase aptly describes why we react so hysterically: we read »crisis« but mean «oversaturation.« We lament the erosion of social cohesion, even though almost everyone is active on social networks.

Authentic style writing—or graffiti art—is one of the few truly critical and world-changing art forms; creativity always implies a protest against the prevailing conditions of the world around us. On an individual level, it means not only discovering and cultivating one’s own artistic style and learning independence and innovation, but also—crucially—thinking beyond the confines of one’s own limited horizon.

It will be interesting to see how reflectively kids respond to digital dominance using analog tools.

In 2023, I had the opportunity to decorate the master bedroom of refereeing legend Lutz Wagner—and especially that of his wife, Petra—with a North Sea motif. As always, I created the design freehand using standard acrylic spray paints.

Lutz Wagner is currently serving as a guest commentator for the men’s 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Anders, wenn man in der Realität seine Bookmark hinterlassen darf. Der Anschein des leicht zu erstellenden Protestes und des Namedropping auf Oberflächen im angeblich ungeschützten Raum verleitet viele Kids und Jugendliche dazu, zu vermuten professionelle Sachbeschädigung sei ein Leichtes.

Meine Erfahrung reicht weit zurück (-zum Jahr 1990 um genau zu sein-) um dem massiv zu widersprechen und darüber gerne aufzuklären.

Beim Aufräumen habe ich gerade diese Referenz, einen Artikel im Senckenberg-Wissenschaftsmagazin aus dem Jahr 2013 gefunden, als ich mit einer vierten Klasse der Frankfurter Schule am Erlenbach das Projekt »Wie stellt ihr euch die Natur in Zukunft vor?« im Rahmen der Ausstellung Planet 3.0 Klima.Leben.Zukunft des Senckenberg Museums in Frankfurt realisierte.

Dort in unmittelbarer Nähe des Eingangs zum Museum sprühte ich mit und für die Kids deren Vorschläge auf einen ca. 6 m hohen Doppelcontainer. Die Vorschläge waren durch die Bank weg vom wilden Affen gebissen und ich hatte Riesenspaß die Ideen umzusetzen, teilweise unter den strengen Augen der Autoren, die mir da immer wieder auch Korrekturen ansagten.

Insgesamt ein Projekt, daß sicher Leuchtturmfunktion hatte und Nachahmer fand.

Just learn whatever you want …

Learning processes aren’t supposed to be fun—at least not in the middle school grades of the traditional school system. Attention, it seems, has become nothing more than a feigned pretense on the part of those being „instructed“ (!!!).

It is a different story, however, when one gets to leave one’s „bookmark“ in the real world. The illusion of easily executed protest—and of name-dropping across surfaces within supposedly unprotected public spaces—leads many kids and teenagers to assume that professional-grade vandalism is a walk in the park.

My own experience dates back quite a way—to 1990, to be precise—and allows me to strongly refute this notion, as well as to happily set the record straight.

While tidying up recently, I stumbled upon this particular reference: an article from the 2013 issue of the *Senckenberg* science magazine. It documents a project I undertook with a fourth-grade class from the *Schule am Erlenbach* in Frankfurt, titled »How Do You Imagine Nature in the Future?« The project was realized as part of the Senckenberg Museum Frankfurt’s exhibition Planet 3.0: Climate.Life.Future.

Right there, in the immediate vicinity of the museum entrance, I worked alongside—and on behalf of—the kids to spray-paint their ideas onto a double-stacked shipping container standing approximately six meters high. Their suggestions were, without exception, absolutely wild and wacky; I had a blast bringing their ideas to life—at times working under the watchful eyes of the young „authors“ themselves, who would frequently call out corrections as I worked.

All in all, it was a project that undoubtedly served as a beacon of inspiration and found plenty of imitators.
